Although there are only three main fuels used in vehicles today (gasoline, propane, and diesel), many many more are slowly coming into the market, some faster than others. Fuels like biodiesel, natural gas (CNG and LNG), ethanol, hydrogen, and methanol are all becoming increasingly popular. This graph shows the energy density of some of these fuels plus some others. Energy density is one major factor of efficiency.
